  • 130 Condos Pitched at Potomac Mills

    Five Oaks Properties wants to put 130 stacked condominiums on the 5.76 acres at 14139 Potomac Mills Road, where the Kaiser Permanente clinic has sat vacant. The developer paid $5.5 million for the site in April — about $955,000 an acre, or roughly $42,300 per planned unit — and is asking to rezone from general business to mixed use-urban, with buildings capped at four stories and 12 of the units set aside as affordable. County staff back the rezoning but object to the reduced landscape buffers and narrowed street-tree strips. The Planning Commission hears the case Wednesday, September 9. (Potomac Local)

  • Off Duty, First on Scene

    Occoquan Police Officer Justin Hendrickson was off duty on southbound I-95 in Stafford at about 2:30 in the morning on May 29 when he stopped at a burning vehicle, helped pull people out of it, and gave first aid until crews arrived. Five people died in that crash and more than 30 were hurt. On August 18 the Occoquan Town Council passed a unanimous resolution honoring him, and Mayor Earnie Porta handed him a framed copy: "This really does exemplify the best in law enforcement officers, what you did here." Virginia State Police separately commended his "calm demeanor, decisive actions, courage, compassion." (Potomac Local)

  • The County's First Park Ranger Apprentices Just Graduated

    Three Prince William teens finished the county's pilot Park Ranger Apprenticeship this summer — an 8-to-12-week program run jointly by the Office of Community Safety and Parks and Recreation that puts 14- to 17-year-olds alongside working park rangers for five to fifteen hours a week. They came out of it with real hours in ranger operations, public speaking, emergency response and event security, and with a look inside how a county actually runs. Andrew, one of the three: "I never thought I would really like being a park ranger so much… You never know what you're going to see, and that's what I like about it." One father's version is the line that sticks: "He would lay his clothes out the night before, he just couldn't wait to get here." Community Services, Social Services, the Juvenile Court Service Unit and the mentoring group Vicktory Life all had a hand in it, and the partners are now weighing a second cohort. (PWC)
