Quick Bites

  • New Driver’s License Scanning System to Streamline Landfill Access in Prince William County

Starting March 31, 2025, Prince William County will implement a new driver’s license scanning system at its landfill and compost facilities to verify residency. This system will replace manual ID checks and the use of facility decals, streamlining the entry process for residents. The new technology will quickly scan Virginia DMV-issued IDs to confirm addresses, but will not store any personal information. Additionally, the system will identify residents from nearby towns and cities, such as Dumfries, Occoquan, Haymarket, Quantico, Manassas, and Manassas Park, who are not covered by the County Solid Waste Management Fee and will be charged accordingly. Overall, the goal is to reduce wait times, improve accuracy, and enhance service efficiency for those using the county’s solid waste facilities. (PWC)

  • Data Centers Face 12% Tax Hike as Prince William Considers Budget Plan

Prince William County supervisors are considering raising taxes on data centers by 12% for fiscal year 2025, potentially increasing the "computers and peripherals" tax rate from $3.70 to $4.15 per $100 of assessed value. The move could generate significant revenue while possibly enabling reductions in car and real estate taxes for residents. Data centers, which have contributed over $166 million in local tax revenue, would bear most of the burden. The board also plans to keep real estate and car tax rates steady for now and propose a 3% hike in solid waste fees. Public hearings on these measures are forthcoming. (PW Times)

  • NOVA Unveils $1M Program to Retrain Laid-Off Federal Workers and Contractors

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is launching NOVAnext, a program offering up to $1 million in scholarships to help recently laid-off federal workers and contractors gain new skills through free courses and workshops. Targeting around 1,000 participants, the program focuses on certifications in IT, HR, and management fields, with additional job readiness support. Eligibility is based on recent unemployment, residency, and an online application. The effort comes in response to widespread federal layoffs and aims to connect workers with emerging job opportunities. (CC Daily)
