Manassas Officer Champions Dementia Awareness Amid Rising Cases
A Manassas police officer is taking proactive steps to support families affected by dementia, as cases rise across Virginia. Master Police Officer Shauna Moller is leading efforts to connect residents with resources, educate the public on early symptoms, and prevent crises. The department is participating in a May 10 resource fair, offering support from 22 organizations. This initiative reflects a broader trend, as dementia rates climb throughout the DMV region. (ABC7)
Woodbridge Gets a Taste of Local with New Thursday Farmers Market
A new Thursday farmers market is launching on June 5 in Woodbridge, hosted by Long Family Markets in the parking lot of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. Running weekly through September, the market will feature fresh produce and local artisan goods, and accept various forms of payment, including SNAP benefits. The initiative aims to promote healthier eating habits and support the local economy. (PW Times)
City Council Maintains Real Estate Tax Rate in Proposed Budget
The Manassas City Council approved a first reading of the city budget that retains the current real estate tax rate of $1.26 per $100, despite some members pushing for a reduction. Rising property values will still lead to higher tax bills. The personal property tax rate also remains unchanged. While some council members advocated for tax relief, most supported maintaining rates to fund city services and infrastructure. A final vote is scheduled for June 9. (Patch)
