Dominion Sues the County Over Vint Hill | Early Voting Ends Saturday at 5 | A Playground Designed by Local Kids Opens

Restore the Quantico Iwo Jima Monument

On October 21, a vandal took the head off one of the figures. Felix de Weldon's limestone sculpture of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi has stood outside Marine Corps Base Quantico's main gate for generations. The damage is extensive — other parts of the sculpture were hit too — and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation says restoration could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have opened a fund. This notice stays at the top of GoPWCVA until the monument is whole again. Donate to the restoration fund.

Issue #26-301

In this Go Prince William County, Va Issue…

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and the county noticed. 🎃

In this Go Prince William County, Va Issue… Dominion is suing the county over the Vint Hill substation its supervisors voted down, early voting ends Saturday at 5, and a playground designed by local kids opened at Hellwig Park.

Downstairs: Occoquan's costume parade steps off down Mill Street at 10, with trick-or-treating back through town after. Old Town Manassas throws Fall-O-Ween on the museum lawn — kids' parade at 1, pets at 2:30.

Also: OmniRide parks decorated buses in Dumfries and Woodbridge, a ranger walks you out to two of Prince William Forest Park's forgotten cemeteries, and Dumfries runs its trunk-or-treat at Garrison Park at five.

Seventy-five and sunny Friday. Upper sixties Saturday. The rain holds off until Sunday night.

Quick Bites

  • Dominion Sues the County Over Vint Hill

Dominion Energy has filed an emergency lawsuit against Prince William County and its Board of County Supervisors after the board denied a special use permit at its Sept. 22 meeting, blocking the expansion of the electric switching station on Vint Hill Road in Nokesville, across the street from the Braemar neighborhood. The plan would have replaced the existing station with a gas-insulated facility including new power transformers, 135-foot towers and two 40-foot-tall buildings; supervisors cited its proximity to homes and schools and what some described as a lack of transparency from Dominion about the project's size and scope. In its suit, Dominion calls the denial "unlawful" because it "relied on issues outside the board's authority," and says grid operator PJM requires the upgrade to prevent severe power grid overloads expected by late 2027 — driven in part by data centers the board itself approved. County spokeswoman Nicole Brown said, "The county does not comment on active litigation." (Prince William Times)

  • Early Voting Ends Saturday at 5

This is the last GoPWCVA before the Nov. 3 election. In-person early voting runs through Saturday, Oct. 31 — weekdays 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, until 7 PM on Wednesday, and 8:30 AM–5 PM on Saturday — at six locations: the Office of Elections (9250 Lee Ave., Suite 1, Manassas), the AJ Ferlazzo Building (15941 Donald Curtis Dr., Woodbridge), Brentsville Courthouse (12229 Bristow Rd., Bristow), DMV Woodbridge (2731 Caton Hill Rd.), the Dumfries Community Center (17757 Main St.) and Haymarket Gainesville Library (14870 Lightner Rd.). You will need an acceptable form of ID. Three statewide constitutional amendments are on every ballot in the county: one on reproductive freedom, one that would remove the constitution's same-sex marriage ban and affirm that two adults may marry regardless of sex, gender or race, and one establishing a fundamental right to vote with voting rights restored automatically on release from incarceration. • A Playground Designed by Local Kids Opens

Prince William Parks & Recreation, Amazon and the nonprofit KABOOM! unveiled a new inclusive, accessible playground at George Hellwig Memorial Park on Friday, Oct. 23, built that week by more than 200 volunteers. It sits next to the Dr. Richard Tami Miracle Field, and it was designed from children's own drawings collected at a Design Day in August. The county expects it to serve more than 900 children a year. "Every child deserves a place where they feel welcome, included and free to play," said Janet Bartnik, acting director of Prince William County Parks and Recreation. It is open now, which makes it a cheap Sunday if the costumes are all packed away. (PWC)

Friday is the pick of the three — 75 and full sun, which is a gift on October 30. Saturday cools to the upper sixties with partial sun and almost no wind, so trick-or-treating is about as easy as Halloween gets here; it bottoms out at 48 before dawn, so the morning parades want a jacket. Sunday clouds over and still reaches 69, and the rain waits until after dark — showers move in Sunday evening and climb to a 40% chance overnight.
