I-95 Express Lanes Could Run Both Ways | Iwo Jima Vandal Now Faces Federal Charges | Route 1 at Quantico Narrows Overnight

Restore the Quantico Iwo Jima Monument

On October 21, a vandal took the head off one of the figures. Felix de Weldon's limestone sculpture of the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi has stood outside Marine Corps Base Quantico's main gate for generations. The damage is extensive โ€” other parts of the sculpture were hit too โ€” and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation says restoration could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have opened a fund. This notice stays at the top of GoPWCVA until the monument is whole again. Donate to the restoration fund.

Issue #26-308

In this Go Prince William County, Va Issueโ€ฆ

Veterans weekend starts Friday, and the county goes all in. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

In this Go Prince William County, Va Issueโ€ฆ VDOT is studying two-way I-95 Express Lanes around the clock, the man accused of damaging the Quantico Iwo Jima monument now faces federal charges, and Route 1 at Quantico narrows overnight starting tonight.

Downstairs: the 18th Northern Virginia Veterans Parade steps off down Center Street in Old Town Manassas at 11 Saturday. The Marine museum throws a Family Day the same morning, 10 to 3, for Veterans Day, the Corps' birthday and the museum's own 20th.

Also: the U.S. Army Band โ€œPershing's Ownโ€ plays the Hylton free Friday night, Dumfries hosts a Men's Day brunch at the Outdoor Showplace Saturday at 11, and from Saturday through Veterans Day you can plant a free flag in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park.

Friday's a washout, with storms possible in the afternoon. Then it clears โ€” sunny and 66 Saturday, 62 Sunday. The parade gets the good day.

Quick Bites

  • I-95 Express Lanes Could Run Both Ways

VDOT is studying whether to convert the reversible I-95 Express Lanes to two-way service around the clock, and briefed the Board of County Supervisors on the idea Oct. 20. Today the lanes carry traffic in one direction at a time. The concept puts three express lanes each way from the Franconia-Springfield Parkway area to Prince William Parkway, and two each way south of there, across roughly 45 miles to Spotsylvania; the study also looks at the effect on OmniRide service. Nothing is decided: feasibility hasn't been established, and VDOT plans public information meetings in 2027 and 2028 and a public hearing in 2028. (PWC)

  • Iwo Jima Vandal Now Faces Federal Charges

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, will face federal charges over the Oct. 21 damage to the Iwo Jima memorial near Marine Corps Base Quantico once he is transferred to federal custody, the U.S. Attorney's Office says. County police found him at the memorial with a sledgehammer; the damage included the head of one of the Marine statues and multiple rifle barrels. The two federal counts carry up to 10 years. For now he remains in county custody: at an Oct. 26 hearing, Circuit Judge Petula Metzler reversed a cashless-bail order and set a $2,500 bond, with mental-health screening and treatment as conditions of release. The restoration fund linked at the top of this issue is still taking donations. (Potomac Local)

  • Route 1 at Quantico Narrows Overnight

Route 1 drops to two lanes near Russell Road from 7 PM to 7 AM starting tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 4, through early Friday, while crews set beams for the replacement of the 93-year-old bridge over Chopawamsic Creek on the Prince Williamโ€“Stafford line. Southbound drivers approaching Joplin Road drop to one lane and are shifted onto the northbound side at Russell Road; the I-95 exit 148 ramps and Russell Road stay open. If weather postpones the work, the same closures move to Monday, Nov. 9 through Wednesday, Nov. 11. Neither window touches the weekend. (Potomac Local)

It clears overnight. Saturday is mostly sunny and 66 with a light northwest breeze, so the 11 AM parade gets the good day, though it starts near 48. Sunday stays mostly sunny but cooler, topping out at 62.
