  • Dumfries Debuts Free ‘Legacy Builders’ Series to Help Families Secure Their Estates

Dumfries is launching a free, six-week “Legacy Builders” series to help residents navigate wills, trusts, and life insurance, starting Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Dumfries Town Hall and culminating with a Nov. 5 graduation. Funded by the African American Mayors Association, the program aims to close estate-planning gaps by combining a kickoff town hall with local attorneys, hands-on wills clinics, and sessions on using life insurance to build generational wealth. Participants who complete the program will receive a Legacy Builder Certificate and a $50 credit toward their will, and registration is open now. (PW Living)

  • On the Occoquan, the ‘Catfish King’ Turns Saturday Mornings into a Riverwide Hangout

Kev’van Young, the self-styled “Catfish King of the Occoquan,” leads a veteran crew that films weekly fishing trips from Occoquan Regional Park for a growing YouTube channel, cruising past local bridges to Belmont Bay and donating much of their catch to fish fry events at Harvest Life Church in Woodbridge. The four friends—Young, Jimmy Benjamin, John “J.C. Raider” Crocker, and Atonial D. “A.J.” Hyatt Jr.—blend safety-first habits with playful camaraderie, favor simple baits like Kool-Aid-and-garlic marinated chicken, and have racked up memorable hauls, including a 37-fish day and a 27-pound Occoquan catch, alongside Young’s 44.8-pound personal best from the James River. • PWCS Joins National Attendance Network After Sharp Drop in Chronic Absences

Prince William County Public Schools has joined the National Attendance and Engagement Meta Network, aligning with districts nationwide to curb chronic absenteeism through shared data and strategies. The division reports a 6.7% decline in chronic absenteeism since 2021, including a 5.7% drop in 2023–24; chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school year, or about 18 days locally. PWCS leaders say the invitation recognizes recent gains and gives the division a voice in national efforts to boost student engagement. (Inside NoVA)
