Quick Bites

  • Prince William County Pushes Visibility and Safe Sharing of the Road This October

Prince William County Police are marking October as Pedestrian Safety Month, partnering with state and federal traffic agencies to promote visibility and safe sharing of the road. Shorter days and seasonal rain or fog increase crash risks for people walking, biking, and for pets. Residents are encouraged to use reflective or light-colored clothing, bike lights (white front, red rear), headlamps or clip-on lights, and reflective leashes and collars. Pairing high-visibility gear with alert, lawful behavior helps keep everyone safer on local roads. (PWC)

  • Prince William County Tests Native Mussels to Boost Stream Health

Prince William County’s Environmental Management Division, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, launched a pilot to test native Eastern Elliptio mussels in restored streams. Mussels from the Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery were placed in mesh cages at four sites (four cages per site, about a dozen mussels each) to track survival and growth. Staff used eDNA and electrofishing to confirm host fish needed for the mussels’ lifecycle before deployment. The study aims to boost biodiversity and water quality, with early monitoring set to guide larger restoration efforts. (PWC)

  • Triple-AAA Status Saves Taxpayers Millions, Signals Stable Local Economy

Prince William County’s AAA bond ratings were reaffirmed by Fitch, S&P Global, and Moody’s, keeping the county among a small group with top-tier credit. The agencies cited strong financial management, formal policies, solid reserves, and broad economic strength, including a growing tax base and proximity to Washington, D.C. The ratings lower borrowing costs for public projects, saving taxpayers and supporting more investment in local services. All three issued a stable outlook, reflecting confidence in the county’s fiscal discipline and resilient economy. (PWC)
