Quick Bites

  • Quantico Live-Fire Runs Through Oct. 23

If the windows rattle this weekend, this is why. Marine Corps Base Quantico has posted live-fire training from Oct. 9 through Oct. 23, including overnight operations. The schedule covers demolitions of 50 pounds and under, missiles, rockets and small arms up to 7.62mm, with one multi-day range running from the morning of Oct. 9 to the evening of Oct. 14. Expect noise across the southern end of the county and into Stafford, after dark included, straight through this weekend and the week that follows. (Potomac Local)

  • Dumfries Clears the Way for a Grocer

The Dumfries Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the last three conditional use permits standing between the town and a full-size grocery store โ€” a drive-thru pharmacy, beer and wine sales, and the development's sign plan. North Carolina's Bridgeline Development is planning a 50,325-square-foot store with a pharmacy, outdoor dining and another 6,700 square feet of retail at 17439 and 17471 Old Stage Coach Road, rezoned from industrial to general business last month. "Eradicating the food desert here in Dumfries, it has been something that we've been working on and talking about," Vice Mayor Monaรฉ Nickerson said. The developer still will not name the grocer, but Bridgeline has built Publix stores before, and Publix already has its first Prince William location under construction at Ashland Square. Mayor Derrick Wood called the vote "progress" and said the job now is moving from approval to execution. (InsideNoVa)

  • Locust Shade Bikers Get Their Pump Back

Mountain bikers at Locust Shade Park have a repair stand again. Volunteers with the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts poured a new concrete pad at the park's main trailhead and reinstalled a refurbished stand with basic tools and an air pump. The stand was donated by a MORE member after the 95th St. trail was finished and set on a paver base in July 2022, but runoff kept washing silt onto it. Rather than let it rot, the volunteers pulled it, cleaned and serviced it, and worked with park manager Chris Kelly on a raised concrete footing that should outlast the weather. (PWC)
