Quick Bites

  • Prince William Police Share Simple Steps for a Safe Halloween Night

Prince William County police are reminding families ahead of Halloween on Friday, Oct. 31, to prioritize visibility, supervision, and smart route choices. Dress children in light-colored costumes with reflective tape, equip them with flashlights, and have them travel in groups with a parent or trusted adult. Stick to familiar, well-lit homes and remind kids not to enter houses or vehicles. Ask children to wait until they’re home to eat any candy, then check treats under bright lighting. For non-emergency assistance, call 703-792-6500; in an emergency, dial 911. (PWC)

  • From Oil to Electric: Fuel Assistance Program Eases Winter Energy Costs

Prince William County has opened the 2025–2026 Fuel Assistance Program to help income-eligible households with winter heating costs, with applications due by Nov. 14, 2025. The program can cover a range of fuels—electricity, natural gas, oil, kerosene, coal, or wood—as well as furnace restarts, late charges, delivery and installation fees, and connection or reconnection costs. Benefits are determined in November, with vendor authorizations issued in December, and payments made directly to heating providers. Eligibility is based on household size and total gross monthly income, and applicants must provide proof of income, residency, and heating responsibility. Residents can apply online via the CommonHelp portal (www.commonhelp.virginia.gov), by phone at 855-635-4370, or in person at any DSS service location; for more information, call 703-792-7500. Additional energy supports, including Crisis Assistance and Cooling Assistance, will be available later in the year. (PWC)

  • Six-Week Public Speaking Program Helps Detainees Prepare for Re-Entry

Twelve detainees at the Prince William–Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center completed the six-week “Speak to Me: Re-Entry” public speaking workshop, developed with the Office of Community Safety to reduce recidivism by strengthening communication, confidence, active listening, and trust through structured storytelling and practice. Detention center leaders emphasize communication as essential to re-entry and highlight the workshop as a standout among the ADC’s 74 programs. Participants report increased confidence and clearer goals—from mentoring at-risk youth to pursuing creative paths—while the program continues to show measurable impact since its launch last year.
