Traffic Unit Boosts School-Zone Ops | 5 Ways to Enjoy Fall Outdoors | Archive at RELIC

Issue #25-233

In this Go Prince William County, Va Issue…

PWC Libraries are really impressive. I tried at one point to include all their events in the newsletters; but, there simply isn’t enough room to cover all of them. Check out their latest offering if you have old media laying around with no idea what to do with it. There’s even time with staff to learn the equipment…amazing!

Quick Bites

  • Grant-Funded Lab at RELIC Makes Archiving Home Movies and Keepsakes Easy

Prince William Public Libraries has opened a free Digital Preservation Lab inside the Central Library’s RELIC center, offering easy-to-use stations for converting 8mm/Super 8 film (up to 9-inch reels), VHS/VHS-C tapes, audio cassettes, photos, slides, and negatives into digital files. A dual‑monitor workstation with Adobe Creative Cloud is available for editing, and staff provide one-on-one appointments plus a one-hour orientation to guide patrons through the process. Appointments are required and can be booked via PWPL’s Online Events Calendar by searching “Preservation,” or by contacting 703-792-8380 or [email protected]. The lab was funded by a grant from Virginia Humanities. (PWC)

  • Five Ways to Welcome Fall Outdoors in Prince William County

Prince William County Parks & Recreation is offering five fall programs—birding for beginners and a full moon hike at Neabsco Creek Boardwalk on Sept. 6, a family survival skills session at Silver Lake Park on Sept. 20, a wildlife-focused Twilight Trek at Neabsco on Oct. 11, and a Virginia bird calls walk at Veterans Memorial Park on Nov. 1. Events are family-friendly, with age guidance where applicable, and several include s’mores. Registration, locations, and the full fall schedule are available via the Parks & Recreation website, the Leisure guide, and the RecMapper app. (PWC)

  • Safety First: Traffic Unit Expands School-Zone Operations for the New Year

As school resumes, Prince William County Police’s Traffic Unit is increasing school-zone enforcement and education to curb unsafe driving and improve traffic flow. Established in 1972 and full-time since 1987, the unit now uses advanced speed devices and portable feedback signs that collect speed/time data and display real-time safety reminders. The team also handles commercial vehicle inspections, funeral and event escorts, and can power traffic signals during outages. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to slow down and obey school-zone signs. (PWC)
