  • Slim Pickings at the County's Orchards

    If apple picking was the plan this weekend, call first. Ninety-degree days in March followed by a hard freeze in mid-April took out the fruit blossoms, and the bill is coming due now. Stribling Orchard lost its entire apple and peach crop — "We lost our whole crop," Stacia Stribling said — and has reopened selling pre-picked apples, baked goods and beef, but no self-picking. Hollin Farms, higher up and spared the worst of the freeze, still has apples on the trees, and Yankey Farms' pumpkin patch in Bristow came through fine. County extension agent Tim Ohlwiler's advice is to go anyway and support the growers. (Prince William Times)

  • Early Voting Is Open at Six Locations

    Early voting is underway, and the Woodbridge DMV at 2731 Caton Hill Road now keeps the same hours as the Office of Elections. Beginning Oct. 18, all six sites open daily through Saturday, Oct. 31. The six: the Office of Elections (9250 Lee Ave., Manassas), the AJ Ferlazzo Building (15941 Donald Curtis Drive, Woodbridge), Brentsville Courthouse (12229 Bristow Road, Bristow), DMV Woodbridge, the Dumfries Community Center (17757 Main St.), and Haymarket Gainesville Library (14870 Lightner Road).   • 13 New Officers Join the County Police

    Thirteen new Prince William County police officers graduated from the county's Criminal Justice Academy on Friday, Oct. 2, at Park Valley Church in Haymarket, finishing a 24-week course covering every part of police work. Session 64 elected Nuel Lim class president, Ethan Hurley vice president and Andrew Bresloff class guide. All thirteen already have patrol assignments — five to the Eastern district, four to Central and four to Western — so they will be on county roads shortly. The department says it is still recruiting for future academy sessions. (PWC)
