  • Woodbridge Apartment Building Ruled Unsafe After Three-Alarm Fire

    A three-alarm fire tore through the Landings at Markham's Grant apartments in the 15700 block of Tassia Lane on Saturday afternoon, and the county building official has since ruled the building unsafe to occupy. Crews were called at 4:58 p.m. Twelve adults and seven children were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Two firefighters were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and the Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause. (PW Times)

  • Redesign Adds Stepbacks Next to Historic Meredith House

    The Manassas Architectural Review Board meets Thursday, Aug. 13 to weigh a substantially revised plan for the MIFCO redevelopment on Center Street — a multifamily building and parking garage that would sit beside the historic Meredith House. After feedback from the board and the community, the developer added two-story stepbacks at several points and a six-foot stepback at the fourth and fifth floors. The lower portion would stand 46 feet, with the upper portion about 19 feet higher. Staff say the changes bring the project into line with the city's historic district design guidelines.   • Behind the New Signs at County Intersections

    If you've noticed new signs going up at county intersections, they're the next phase of Prince William County's panhandling response initiative. The signs ask residents to call 311, where trained staff can connect people with county services and community resources, and they encourage drivers to "Give Where It Counts" by supporting local nonprofits instead of giving at the roadside. The county points to housing assistance, food resources, employment support and behavioral health services as what sits on the other end of that call. (PWC)
